I have been studying this plant’s distribution, ecology, and floral phenology for about 5 years now. I had always thought the plant would have low germination since it produces so much seed, but turns out it is pretty high (60-80%) under the right conditions (I use crazy expensive potting soil with mycorrhizae and humic acid and create a mini greenhouse with plastic wrap to keep humidity high) and it transplants well too. I also think it likes to germinate in areas that have been burnt, but that’s just an anecdotal observation from my time crawling through manzanita scrub- the burn scars leave nice pockets to access sunlight within the thick scrub of chaparral vegetation where we have mostly been suppressing fire for a century. Some studies have also shown higher sugar concentration in the nectar of partially burnt plants. I hypothesize that burnt plants attract more pollinators with their concentrated nectar, and then have high germination in a nice new burn area. Maybe I will do a PhD on it someday. Also, I planted this from seed a year ago and it’s just starting to get it’s marginal teeth and has 3 leaves. #agavepalmeri #agavaceae #notacactus

We finished planting hundreds of agaves this morning at Wildlife Corridors on the last day of National #pollinatorweek!
