Aloe Aculeata ° I noticed the medium this little #aloeaculeata came to me in looked to be too peaty which was resulting in insufficient drainage and subsequent water retention in the soil. ° Aloes are a hardy bunch and capable of withstanding moderate neglect, but one thing that is surefire to snuff one out is overwatering/poor drainage. These guys do not like to keep their roots wet at all, succumbing to root rot very quickly if the issue goes undetected. And sure enough, on inspection, this fella here was showing signs of stress (swipe to see decaying leaf). ° A clear indication of too much water retention and an early warning sign that root rot may be occurring beneath the soil is the decay/discolouration of leaves, especially those that are in contact with the soil. Fortunately that is all it had extended to for this guy so I've rinsed his roots and left him to dry off before repotting in a more suitable mix. T'was a lucky escape this time. Aloe aculeata Known locally by the common names of ngopanie or sekope, Aloe aculeata has leaves that are long and broad at the base. The name 'aculeata' means prickly and refers to the presence of the many tuberculate spines on the leaf surfaces. The margins of the leaves are also armed with reddish-brown teeth. The flowers vary in color from yellow to reddish-orange. This species prefers rocky areas in grassland and bushveld, ranging from northern South Africa to Botswana and Zimbabwe. How to care? This plant grows well in light shade to full sun☀️ (Leaves given ideal light, it turns a lovely red and oranges, they tend also to turn red in low water and cold situations). This species requires regular water in summer,  but is dormant and needs very little water in winter, keep it totally dry at or around 4°C. It is easily rooted in potting soil with warmth. Needs good drainage.
