Happy Sunday chubby-plant lovers! It's time to introduce our next #SucculentOfTheWeek , another request this week, Echeveria Derenceana ! Check back every day this week as we dive into this unforgettable succulent focusing on a new topic each day ! This unique hybrid shares the same parentage as one of the most popular of all hybrids, Echeveria Lola, which are fairly similar! The major differences in young plants often are not distinct, and the flowers of both hybrids are often the same color and form! Older plants can be distinguished because of their size, wherein the rosette of E. Lola is several inches larger and more open than that of E. Derenceana. E. Derenceana still has some nice compact, tight leaves growing and is around 4 inches (12 CM) across. It offsets readily and needs direct sunlight to keep its compactness and color! Lola lovers should all check out Echeveria Derenceana! This less known species looks exactly like lola but as it matures it doesn’t open up as wide as Lola does, staying tight, and gets a little more colorful than Lola does too. Echeveria Derenceana is an amazingly versatile plant and has a plethora of subspecies and hybrids surrounding it. This species can survive brief dips below freezing and be grown outdoors year round in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 9a-11 ! Today's post features my beauty of a succulent! Do you have Echeveria Derenceana in your collection already? Share all your favorite plant pictures with us for a chance to win a FREE succulent every month! Post using #ChubbyPlantPeople, tag us, or message us here! If your photo is selected to be featured you will be entered into a monthly raffle (the 30th of each month) for a chance to win a small rooted succulent or cutting as a thank you! Stay tuned all week as we continue to dive into this popular succulent with a new topic each day!

It's tons of types Tuesday as we continue talking about Echeveria Derenceana every day this week with a new topic each day ! This unique hybrid shares the same parentage as one of the most popular of all Succulent hybrids, Echeveria Lola! Both of these stunning hybrids were created by Dick Wright and are each a hybrid within a hybrid, created by carefully crossing Echeveria Lilacina and an Echeveria Derenbergii and Agavoids hybrid, Echeveria"Tippy"! The major differences in young plants often are not very distinct, and the flowers of both hybrids are often the same color and form! Stronger distinctions are more evident in older plants because of their size. The rosettes of E. Lola open more and grow several inches larger than that of E. Derenceana. E. Derenceana also tends to take on more color in full sun, showing off shades of cool pink, purple, and blue in time, whereas Lola's are known for their soft baby pinks and cream colors. Hybrids tend to be less tolerant of frost and shade and will need more care than most. Hybrid Echeverias in temperate climates tend to lose their lower leaves in winter and become 'leggy' and less attractive and a yearly beheading is needed to keep these species looking their best! One major downside of this lovely species is that it attracts pests like crazy, who love it's striking color as much as we do! Watch out for aphids and spider mites in the summer and slugs, snails, and mealy bugs, which can be a problem year round. Mealybugs are especially drawn to the lovely, deep purple foliage that grows with adequate sunlight. Always remove dead and dying leaves as soon as possible, as they quickly accumulate into a haven for undesirable pests ! Today's post features a comparison of both the parantage of this unique hybrid and it's sister species, Echeveria Lola, which shares the same parentage! Swipe for IDs! It's water those plants Wednesday as we continue talking about Echeveria Derenceana every day this week with a new topic each day ! Following the lineage back, the parent plants of this stunning hybrid are both found growing naturally on rocky outcroppings at high altitudes where the water drains quickly away from the roots of the plant, never accumulating and naturally solving their issues with root rot. When looking for care tips for cultivating plants, remember to reference the conditions they evolved to thrive in! Use a very rocky potting mix, at least half perlite or crushed pumice, and be sure to choose a pot with excellent drainage so no water will stand around the roots for long. When watering, remember to take a moment to dump excess water from the center of your Echeveria as soon as possible! Rot truly is a fickle beast. Some Echeverias can be abused, waterlogged, and left in standing water within an inch of their lives before succumbing to rot, others can be treated with the best care in the world and only left with water pooled in the center for a few hours before becoming too rotten to save! To be safe, never allow water to accumulate at any point. Some plant-enthusiasts take things a step further and use a straw or air duster to blow any extra water out after watering. To avoid these worries altogether, you can use the increasingly popular bottom-watering method for delicate plants with extensive and fragile root systems, though it is more labor intensive! Choose a pot with multiple drain holes to most effectively encourage healthy root spread. Place your plant in a container of water for up to ten minutes before removing and allowing to thoroughly drain. Begin with a weekly soaking and adjust as needed. As far as conventional watering methods, always allow your plant to drain thoroughly between waterings and consider investing in a watering can with a narrow spout to avoid flooding the center ! It's share those succulents Saturday as we continue talking about Echeveria Derenceana every day this week with one last topic for the week today, how to propagate your plants ! Echeverias can be propagated in three main ways, either by leaf cuttings, beheadings, or by removing offsets! As a hybrid, the leaf propagation process can take longer on average than other succulent leaves, though they follow the same basic technique and pattern! When removing a leaf for propagation, gently but firmly twist the leaf from the stem. Be sure that the leaf you remove has the meristem intact with no part of the leaf left on the stem! It's better to take a bit of stem than rip the leaf as it will not sprout without being intact. Once removed, allow the leaf to callous over for at least a week before placing it on fast-draining soil and just covering the cut end. It should show signs of growth within a couple months! Echeveria often lose their lower leaves in winter and become 'leggy' and less attractive and a yearly beheading is needed to keep them looking their best. Use a very sharp and perfectly clean knife to cut through the stem just above the bottom two leaves. These leaves encourage new growth on the stem, while the rosette can be calloused over and replanted! These Echeveria also self-propagate by producing offsets that can be removed from the mother plant using a sharp knife or scissors. Allow the offsets a week to callous over, after which they can be planted ! Today's post features the beginnings of a growing Derenceana leaf from my propagation station! If your photo is selected to be featured you will be entered into a monthly raffle (the 30th of each month) for a chance to win a small rooted succulent or cutting as a thank you! It's temperature control Thursday as we continue talking about Echeveria Derenceana every day this week with a new topic each day ! Echeveria Derenceana is not a cold hardy species. While this plant may be fairly durable, it will not tolerate frost and must be brought inside or placed in a greenhouse if the temperature drops too low to protect it from a very sad, mushy death. This species can be grown outdoors year round in USDA plant hardiness zones 9a-11b tolerating a minimum temperature of just around freezing with brief dips as low as 20 degrees Fahrenheit (-7 C) if kept perfectly dry! During their more dormant season, wintertime, Echeveria need much less frequent water and can quickly and spontaneously rot at low temperatures if exposed to frost! Allow the soil to become completely dry between each watering and give your plants as much sunlight and protection as possible! If you must winter your Echeveria indoors, bring them outside during the warm seasons if possible. This species will do best in a south-facing windowsill indoors or under a grow light! In more temperate climates these Echeveria often lose their lower leaves in winter, becoming 'leggy' and less attractive, and a yearly beheading is needed to keep them looking their best ! Echeveria Lola (I think? More on that in a bit) She's super tiny, maybe 1.5" across and her leaves are so compact and adorable. Did you know Lola has a twin sister called Echeveria Derenceana? Their flowers look the same, but aged Lolas have larger rosettes while Derenceana will stay smaller with a more compact shape. Mine is still young, so I won't know for some time! I also read somewhere that true Lolas do not develop pink tips no matter how sunstressed they get can anyone confirm this? . . . #succulents #houseplants #indoorplants plants #succulentsofinstagram #houseplantsofinstagram #plantsofinstagram #colorful #plantsmakepeoplehappy #leaves #plantphotography #plantart #indoorgarden #plantlove #succulentlife #succulentlove #succulentobsession #succulentaddict #plantart #plantlady #gardening #plantstagram #plantsarefriends #plantsofinstagram #plantlover #echeverialola #echeveriaderenceana #succulove #echeveria #natureart #pinkaesthetic
