Happy Sunday chubby-plant lovers! It's time to introduce our next #SucculentOfTheWeek , another request this week, Echeveria Derenceana ! Check back every day this week as we dive into this unforgettable succulent focusing on a new topic each day ! This unique hybrid shares the same parentage as one of the most popular of all hybrids, Echeveria Lola, which are fairly similar! The major differences in young plants often are not distinct, and the flowers of both hybrids are often the same color and form! Older plants can be distinguished because of their size, wherein the rosette of E. Lola is several inches larger and more open than that of E. Derenceana. E. Derenceana still has some nice compact, tight leaves growing and is around 4 inches (12 CM) across. It offsets readily and needs direct sunlight to keep its compactness and color! Lola lovers should all check out Echeveria Derenceana! This less known species looks exactly like lola but as it matures it doesn’t open up as wide as Lola does, staying tight, and gets a little more colorful than Lola does too. Echeveria Derenceana is an amazingly versatile plant and has a plethora of subspecies and hybrids surrounding it. This species can survive brief dips below freezing and be grown outdoors year round in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 9a-11 ! Today's post features my beauty of a succulent! It's tons of types Tuesday as we continue talking about Echeveria Derenceana every day this week with a new topic each day ! This unique hybrid shares the same parentage as one of the most popular of all Succulent hybrids, Echeveria Lola! Both of these stunning hybrids were created by Dick Wright and are each a hybrid within a hybrid, created by carefully crossing Echeveria Lilacina and an Echeveria Derenbergii and Agavoids hybrid, Echeveria"Tippy"! The major differences in young plants often are not very distinct, and the flowers of both hybrids are often the same color and form! Stronger distinctions are more evident in older plants because of their size. The rosettes of E. Lola open more and grow several inches larger than that of E. Derenceana. E. Derenceana also tends to take on more color in full sun, showing off shades of cool pink, purple, and blue in time, whereas Lola's are known for their soft baby pinks and cream colors. Hybrids tend to be less tolerant of frost and shade and will need more care than most. Hybrid Echeverias in temperate climates tend to lose their lower leaves in winter and become 'leggy' and less attractive and a yearly beheading is needed to keep these species looking their best! One major downside of this lovely species is that it attracts pests like crazy, who love it's striking color as much as we do! Watch out for aphids and spider mites in the summer and slugs, snails, and mealy bugs, which can be a problem year round. Mealybugs are especially drawn to the lovely, deep purple foliage that grows with adequate sunlight. Always remove dead and dying leaves as soon as possible, as they quickly accumulate into a haven for undesirable pests !
