If you called this absurd plant an ABOMINATION OF NATURE you'd be on the right track. If you called Eriospermum paradoxum a Christmas tree, you'd be only partly right: It flowers in the summer around our antipodean Christmas time but due to being hysteranthus (flowers when the plant is vegetatively dormant) all evidence of its vegetative tree-like nature would have nigh disappeared by then; secondly the entire "tree" bit is only about 5cm high. The actual leaf blade is much reduced being barely visible in this photo at the top of the dark stalk. From it arises (though I do prefer the autocorrect version "arouses") an intricate and elaborate outgrowth known as an ENATION. The origin and mechanism of this bizarre enation is poorly understood, though I see there have been attempts made to understand it. My personal take on it is that it resembles FASCIATION that in other plants is caused by fungus hijacking the cellular machinery of the plant. Could it be a mutualism between plant and fungus?! Or is it rather a link to it being closely allied to Ruscus in the subfamily Nolinoideae, plants resembling Asparagus that have modified leaves (cladodes/phylloclades) that produces a flower from within the leaf blade? Regardless, what is the purpose of the enation? Harvesting light more efficiently? Reducing water loss? Or perhaps it is to reduce herbivory through two mechanisms: it doesn't look much like a plant, and for a micro - herbivore, eating this enation would be almost impossible! #eriospermum #eriospermumparadoxum #asparagaceae subfamily #nolinoideae #abominationsofnature #weirdplants #strangeplants #enations #CFR #fynbos #enation #hysteranthous
