October 6th - “Dancing Bones Cactus” ✨✨ #Hatiorasalicornioides Hatiora are classified in the tribe Rhipsalideae, which include cacti adapted to humid environments (tropical rainforest, coastal mountains). Since this plant is usually naturally an epiphyte, I may at some point try mounting it with moss to a branch or cork (I’m visualizing an upside down mount, hung from the ceiling). This was a gift from @longbeachplantclub - it was a cutting rooted in water (THaNK YOU!). Hatiora Salicornioides; Drunkard's Dream This one is the one plant that has been in my care the longest. I started this with a cutting from my sister's plant about 25 years ago. It has spawned generations of babies over the years. As winter sets in, it will cover itself with yellow blooms which look just like tiny orchid cactus flowers. While smaller specimens of this plant are fairly common, I have seen very few that have reached maturity. This guy hangs in a south facing window for the winter and hangs in the shade outdoors for the summer. From now through the end of blooming, I will water very little, but when growth resumes, I water as soon as the plant is dry. Sunday funday! Went to @indoorsun with @meeks.andrew yesterday, and picked up this adorable little Hatiora salicornioides! (Thanks for the proper ID, @theboysprouts and @corgisandplants!) I wanted a small plant that could be grown as a kokedama ball in a little hanging geometric terrarium planter thing that has seen the death of several Senecio. So I stuck with the succulents, but found a type that wouldn’t mind staying a little moist if I’m too generous with water, but also won’t mind drying out when I’m lazy and forgetful. Hatiora are another tropical epiphytic cactus, true to the theme of my recent interests. I’ve never grown one that was more about the foliage than the flowers, but I’m totally getting the appeal as I see the Hatiora growing mounted, like one that @echino_ did on driftwood. Hanging a kokedama ball in a little terrarium on a layer of gravel allows me a conveniently keep it watered to its liking, and it should like the small boost of humidity around the roots as it grows wild out the opening! I have a bit of an epiphytic cactus obsession. This isn't even my entire collection of jungle cacti, but ten is the limit for pictures here. A couple of these plants are newer, but most have been in my collection for at least a decade. Their blooming season is beginning with the rhipsalis pilocarpa, but one or more of them is usually heading into blooming season at any given time. These guys are easy if you understand their needs, but can be challenging for a once a week waterer. I would give care instructions, but each one is completely different. This funky little jungle cactus makes me so happy!! It has a few common names (dancing bones, drunkards dream), and maybe more than one scientific name, but I've labeled it hatiora salicornioides, which is very closely related to rhipsalis. I decided to try an experiment when I got it a few months ago, and potted some of it in this glass almost-terrarium. I layered charcoal, then sphagnum, and then the roots are in very chunky pumice. Whenever the plant starts to look a little deflated, and the pumice gets bright white, I spray it down and moisten the pumice. It seems very happy like this!
