Bulbine is known for its jelly-like leaves that look just like warabi mochi (lol)—it's their signature charm! Often called "flowering aloe," bulbine is a popular group in ornamental gardening thanks to its sleek, aloe- or lily-like leaves and showy, vibrant blooms. But this particular species, "mesembryanthoides," lives up to its name meaning "mesemb-like," with its unique leaf shape: the leaves appear cut off halfway, forming window-like openings. Its appearance is more reminiscent of close relatives like Haworthia, or even has a vibe very similar to the cluster-forming Conophytum burgeri C. burgeri —you might actually believe it's a colony-forming burgeri if someone told you! Those large "windows" in the leaves catch the light and seem to glow blue depending on the angle, adding an air of mystery and keeping this plant a secret favorite among enthusiasts. This is a winter-growing species, so from autumn to spring, it thrives with plenty of sunlight and water, while in summer you should almost withhold water completely. In autumn, it puts out new, sharply pointed leaves. Come spring, you'll spot its quirky yellow flowers, a bit like little beetles, peeping out here and there.
