At first glance, its tangled mass spreads out like oak leaves, but look closer and you'll notice tiny leaves lined up, resembling a sansho (Japanese pepper) tree, giving it an endearing charm. From a young age, the trunk thickens and becomes sturdy, growing even more robust as it matures, while the branches remain slender, long, and delicate. This very contrast of "strength and cuteness"—the essence of caudiciform plants—is one of the reasons why these plants are beloved by collectors, who enjoy this balance from seedling to maturity. While it's often compared to O. pachypus , the so-called "king" of caudiciforms both in appearance and horticultural circles, you might think of it as a loyal attendant serving alongside royalty. The name "fagaroides" comes from its resemblance to "Fagara" (wild lime), a close relative of sansho; not only does its appearance evoke this connection, but if you gently rub the leaves or trunk, a citrus-like scent drifts up—another reason this species is adored by caudiciform enthusiasts ((...so it's said, though I have yet to experience it myself)). Other fragrant caudiciforms include "Commiphora" and "Boswellia", well known for carrying delightful scents, drawing a special lineage that links aroma to the world of caudiciforms.
