This plant is a close relative of the "Moss Rose L. spectabilis ," or Lampranthus spectabilis, but it stands out with its extremely thick leaves and jumbo-sized flowers—everything about it is big and bold. One of the most interesting features of the genus Carpobrotus is that these succulents bear juicy, fig-like edible fruits, earning them the nickname "Sea Fig." They naturally grow in harsh, rocky coastal areas. The name "chilensis" means "originating from Chile," but it's believed that the plants actually spread much earlier—perhaps brought over during the Age of Exploration, either as food, for gardening, or even by accident among cargo. Because the true native range is still uncertain, Wikipedia lists it as "probably South Africa." In California, they're considered troublesome invasive species. In Japan, they've naturalized in places like the Atsumi Peninsula as well.
