DETAIL

A certain "tiny tree laden with sparkling jelly bean-like fruits" has been quietly making waves in online image searches. One candidate for its true identity is a representative species of Drosanthemum, which I've managed to order. Although its leaves aren’t perfectly round and are a bit on the long side, if you take a close look, their shiny surface looks just like a cluster of glossy jelly—almost like corn kernels—reflecting light in all sorts of dazzling ways. It definitely has the potential to be called a "tree studded with sparkling jelly." During its growing season, it fattens up its green leaves and unfurls what appear to be white flowers at the leaf tips, giving it a vibe quite similar to T. densum . As a fellow member of the mesemb family from South Africa, it is said to bloom white flowers much like the ice plant or lithops. Other plants that are also called jelly beans trees include the genus Dicrocaulon (for example, Dicrocaulon ramulosum D. ramulosum —which, judging by images online, might be an even stronger candidate), and the genus Pilea (such as Pilea globosa P. globosa ).
