This clumping cactus, Echinocactus polycephalus ssp. xeranthemoides, calls the top of the Grand Canyon home, found from Arizona up into Utah. It's covered in so many long, stiff, slender spines that it's almost impossible to see the plant body beneath. Back when this species became popular among collectors, it was common practice to trim the parent plant’s spines short to protect the pups from damage—a tradition you might still spot in some plants even today.
