Although it looks like a cactus and is sometimes called a "something-cactus," this plant actually belongs to the Apocynaceae family, so it's not a cactus at all. Its striking matte blue-gray color and upright, columnar form (around 5 cm in diameter—fairly large for a table-sized plant) are very reminiscent of classic cacti. However, its flowers are much more like those in the milkweed family, with a distinctive, napkin-like single-petal look and unusual red coloring. The genus Hoodia has recently been reclassified under the genus Ceropegia, so C. macrantha is now its official scientific name.
