At first glance, it's hard to believe this plant is a cactus. Its unique form spreads oval, sandal-like areoles wide. If you focus just on the way it stretches its tubercles and displays its areoles at the tips, you might say it's quite typical of a Mammillaria—well, sort of. This species is closely related to M. saboae , and similar shapes can also be found among other Mammillarias like pectinifera M. pectinifera , as well as in Epithelantha micromeris E. micromeris and Turbinicarpus pseudopectinatus T. pseudopectinatus .
This is a newly discovered cactus species found in 2013 by Andreas Berthold in Oaxaca, Mexico and officially registered in 2014 by Mammillaria specialist journal reporter Thomas Linzen in Germany. At first, Berthold’s discovery was introduced anonymously in an article, but later, when Linzen registered the species, it was named bertholdii in honor of Berthold—a story that adds a little drama to its history.
