A close relative of the "ice plant M. crystallinum ", this species also stores salt and covers itself in sparkling crystals. However, its slender, upright, tube-like leaves have earned it the nicknames "Slender Ice Plant" and "Slender-Leafed Crystal Plant". While there are other species within Mesembryanthemum, as well as different plants altogether, that have this unique ability to absorb and stabilize salt, these two species have been especially studied and their powers scientifically demonstrated. As a result, when people think of ice plants, these are the ones that come to mind as the classic examples.
