DETAIL

With its chunky, rugged look—like an oversized thorny branch—Orbea dummeri really packs a punch, evoking the wild power of some hardy survivor out on the frontier. Unlike typical thorny plants, it doesn’t really have leaves; all year round, what you see are thick, spiky stems. This plant, called "Orbea," has a tough, almost intimidating vibe a bit like cacti or euphorbias, but it's actually a member of the "milkweed" family, making it a relative of the popular houseplant Hoya, as well as a distant cousin to Adenium and Pachypodium. Orbea dummeri is native to the open grasslands of eastern Africa, in places like Kenya and Uganda, where it forms small colonies scattered across the landscape, toughing it out through dry spells. Another unique feature is the flower—it produces charming (depending on your perspective!) yellow star-shaped blooms that might surprise you given its fierce appearance. Lots of milkweed relatives are known for putting out unusual scents to attract insects, so if you're curious what kind of fragrance these flowers are hiding, why not bring one home and find out for yourself?
