This Yucca is known for its sharply pointed leaves and has earned the nickname "Spanish Bayonet." Another notable feature is how its older leaves tend to remain attached. In its native habitat, it can grow into a giant tree reaching 5 to 6 meters. It was introduced to Japan in the Meiji era (records suggest that around Meiji 15 or 16, botanist Sadakichi Imai from Kochi named it "Senbairan"). Originally, a fuzzy, woolly name like Chimoran ((Chimo-ran)) was used—likely because the name actually belonged to Y. filamentosa but got mistakenly assigned to aloifolia. Today, almost no one uses either of those old names, and it's now called "Senjuran" instead (the characters look pretty similar to "Senmoran"). In the gardening world, you'll often find the variegated form, Kinpōran Y. aloifolia 'Marginata' , on the market.
