The name Puya sounds cute. The plant absolutely is not. Native to the high Andes of South America, these colossal relatives of the pineapple produce fearsome leaves armed with hard, sharp edges. Some species spread over a meter wide and send flower spikes soaring skyward. Their legendary blooms are sometimes said to appear only once in a century—a fitting scale for one of the botanical world’s true giants.
