Greenovia aureaきゅっとすぼまった蕾みたいなロゼットが、心地よい光と風を浴びると魔法のようにゆっくり開いていく。今はアエオニウムと同じものとされながらもその個性的な「休眠フォルム」でいまなお旧名「グリーノビア」で呼ばれているコたちの、代表とも言えるのがこの「オーレア」。名前をよく聞く（というか耳に残りやすい）「ドドランタリス G. dodrantalis 」はロゼット2～6cmと小さくポコポコ群生しやすいのに対し、オーレアは8～15cmとりっぱなサイズで比較的単頭のまま大きくなる（分頭しにくい）という違いがあります。ふるさとも、オーレアはカナリア諸島の広い範囲なのに対し、ドドランタリスはテネリフェ島アナガ半島のみ。この顔の広さが「グリーノビアの代表」と言えるゆえんかもしれません。aurea は「黄金の」という意味で花の色に由来。属が変わったときに種名も変わったので正式名は「アエオニウム オーレウム」ですが、いまも「グリーノビア オーレア」で通っています（組み合わせはごっちゃにしたらダメです）。
