Sorry for the slow updates on this column lately. There have been some things going on at home... but let's set that aside for now! I've got a few topics in the works, but today I'm bringing you a quick tip.
If you're looking after plants, I highly recommend keeping a close eye on the temperature and humidity of their environment. The key environmental factors for plants are sunlight, watering, and temperature. Of these, watering is by far the trickiest, but things like sunlight and temperature often get left to “just eyeball it” or rely on your own senses. However, these are the parts where it’s actually best to get precise and check them with numbers. You'd be surprised by how different your perception can be from the actual data!
So for this post, I’ll share my personal recommendations for the best temperature and humidity meters, based on what I’ve actually used myself.
Okay. Despite promising a big list, there's actually just this one I want to introduce. Seriously, this is the one temperature and humidity meter I'd recommend to every single person, everywhere.
Why? It’s pretty much what it says right on the box: temperature and humidity fluctuate! Even if you glance over and see a comfy 28°C, it’s not unusual for the day’s high to have actually hit 36°C at some point. Especially when you’re not in the room. Plants are dealing with the temperature all day, even when you’re not around, so even if you think most of the time is comfortable, if there's even one moment that week where it shoots up to 38°C, or drops to –5°C, that can be disastrous.
The beauty of this meter is not only does it record changes every hour, it stores up to a full week of data(※). So you don’t have to check it constantly! Once you get used to seeing the data visualized in its graphs, you’ll never want to go back.
※ The upgraded TT-581 model stores two weeks of data(costs about 20% more), so don’t mix them up.
Another plus: the sleek, rounded, and super cute design. Both the display and the graph have a unified look that makes you think a really talented designer worked on it. Absolute perfection.
And the best part? You can snag this on Amazon for about 3,000 yen. If it were 10,000 yen, I probably wouldn't recommend it. But at this price—honestly, that's less than what some basic meters cost! It's amazing to get such fantastic features and design for such a reasonable price. You really feel TANITA's goodwill shining through.
If I were to suggest an alternative, there’s this CRECER thermometer (note: it doesn’t measure humidity). It tracks only the min/max temperatures, but here’s the neat part: it comes with a cable, letting you track temperatures in two separate places at once. For example—indoor and soil temps, outside air and potting mix, sunny vs. shady spots, and so on. That way, you can really see how different conditions affect the environment.
Pretty cool, right? I thought so too. I'd love for beginners to use this and fine-tune their instincts, but honestly, the cable tends to break easily, so I can't give it a full recommendation. It might be best to think of this as a use-for-six-months-to-a-year-and-then-replace kind of item.
Whether it's temperature or sunlight, measuring is critical. We all feel heat or cold differently, and even the same person will experience it differently depending on things like clothing, health, or how much you’ve been moving around. Plus, even if the care manual says “can tolerate down to –1°C,” it's actually pretty hard to know what –1°C feels like just by instinct. These things only start to make sense once you get in the habit of checking with precise measurements.
So, seeing really is believing! Go ahead—grab one for yourself today!
