With sparkling quartz crevices and branches twisting delicately, covered in snowflake-like scales, the plant gives the impression of a white snake quietly peeking out from behind the rocks. This peculiarly un-plantlike appearance comes from the white, semi-translucent "scales" that wrap around its stems—not leaves, but rather highly developed "stipules"—special structures at the base of leaves. In Avonia, these stipules cover the true leaves, granting the plant the special ability to shield itself from dryness, which is one of its most exciting features.
Among Avonia, the most well-known varieties are this Papyracea @(1445) and "Quinaria Avonia quinaria." Unlike Quinaria, whose thick caudex is clearly visible above ground, Papyracea grows relatively thick (around 1cm) stems that radiate out in a fluffy cluster from a single point, without developing a pronounced basal caudex ). Once fully grown, their appearance is quite different (though as seedlings, they are almost impossible to tell apart).
Whereas Quinaria produces flowers that can appear ten times larger than its stems, Papyracea's blooms are roughly the same size as the branch. These plants are native to the blazing-hot quartz deserts of Little Karoo, South Africa.
Most Papyraceas found in Japan are grown from stem cuttings, so a thickened caudex may not form. However, even without the caudex, there seems to be little change in their attractive visual style.
