Meet Cyphostemma juttae, a member of the grape family (Vitaceae) native to South Africa, known for its bold presence among caudiciform plants. Unlike typical grapevines, this striking plant doesn’t produce climbing tendrils. Instead, it grows with a sturdy, heavy-set shape, eventually reaching a height of about 1 to 2 meters as a small shrub. Its standout feature is its large, serrated-edged leaves that truly give it a classic grape-family look. In season, it produces clusters of red, translucent, grape-like fruit—but do keep in mind, these are toxic and not edible.
