DETAIL

When people talk about Dorstenia, " D. gigas " is hands-down the most popular and well-known species among succulent and caudiciform plant enthusiasts, so the name "elata" might not ring a bell for many. But that's only natural—because in terms of plant types, "elata" isn't classified as a succulent but as a foliage plant. Native to jungles, it's shade-tolerant and, at its peak, produces so many leaves that they're often much bigger than the trunk itself. The leaves have a glossy shine, and their veins ripple like cheerleading streamers, creating waves that shimmer and reflect light in a beautiful, sparkling display—one of its hallmark traits.

(So, the DETAIL photos circulating among succulent fans are likely of a different plant than "elata". Although some sources are selling it under the name "elata", it seems to be a case of mistaken identity somewhere along the line. Even succulent vendors who use this name are probably just more "victims" of the mix-up (lol).)

The flowers are incredibly unique too—they look nothing like typical flowers, more like milk crown-shaped goblets. Since this plant self-pollinates, it sets seeds on its own, which are then flung away when they’re ripe, showcasing quite a dynamic trick. This striking feature has probably led some people to interpret "elata" as meaning “to fling” or "scatter", but in Latin, elata actually means “tall, impressive, or proud” (and true to the name, the plant's stem apparently grows upright and slender). It isn’t very cold-tolerant, so be sure not to let temperatures drop below 10°C—bring it indoors for winter care.

Caption In April 2026, it finally started showing some new growth. Still, even during the winter, it seemed to slowly put out leaves and stayed about this size.
