A compact Euphorbia whose slender stems fade in gradient from blue-green to copper tones, sprouting in dense, branching clusters from the base. Lined along these stems are sharp, reddish-brown paired thorns. The scientific name "aeruginosa" references this unique stem coloring, meaning "copper rust or patina." Some botanical texts note the presence of a caudex (swollen root base), but in practice it doesn’t stand out much—in cultivation, the roots stay hidden and countless green stems shoot up directly from the pot, branching out to form a large bushy clump.

This species calls the rocky slopes of Limpopo province, South Africa home. E. schinzii , E. limpopoana , E. acervata , and E. plenispina are all close relatives, often grouped in collections referred to as the "Scolopendriae group"(see: [Scolopendriae group(https://botany.cz/en/euphorbia-aeruginosa/#:~:text=Scolopendriae]
). However, this aeruginosa is nearly the only member you'll commonly find in the market. Horticulturally, it resembles E. greenwayii , but the resemblance is purely coincidental—their relationship and habitats are quite distant.

To bring out those stunning colors*, strong sunlight is essential. If deprived of light, stems grow elongated and their color fades. While not particularly cold-hardy, aeruginosa does best when kept on a bright windowsill indoors during winter.
