Born in Japan, this hybrid takes the best traits from Euphorbia bupleurifolia—which is a bit tricky to grow but striking in appearance—and the hardy, fast-pupping, cluster-forming Euphorbia suzannae. Its name comes from Mount Emei, a sacred peak in Sichuan, China; perhaps those craggy mounds reminded someone of a rugged mountain. This Japanese original is gaining popularity abroad too, where it's sometimes called the "Pineapple Euphorbia" or even "Cocklebur." It’s been around for quite a while, but details like the original breeder or the exact year it was created seem to have been lost to time.
