This dense-spined barrel cactus, native to Cedros Island, Mexico, is completely covered in twisted golden spines—so thick that you can barely see its skin beneath. True to its genus name Ferocactus, which literally means “fierce-spined cactus,” this is one of the densest-spined species in the group. In Japanese, it's called 'Kinkanryu' (Golden Crown Dragon) for its brilliant golden spines. While some say it can reach up to 30 cm wide and 1 meter tall, it grows slowly—there are even real-life examples of plants only just over 20 cm across after 18 years of cultivation—so expect it to be a long-term companion.
The spines are typically golden yellow, but some plants can have orange or even red spines. In Japan, these red-spined types are known as 'Akabari Kinkanryu' (red-spined Golden Crown Dragon). However, red-spined plants you see in shops aren't always direct descendants of naturally red-spined wild plants—they could be seedlings from standard Kinkanryu, or possibly hybrids with other red-spined Ferocactus species. In summer, it blooms with yellow to orange flowers. Plants with red flowers belong to a different subspecies, F. chrysacanthus ssp.grandiflorus , which was originally considered a variant of '紅洋丸 F. fordii '. The scientific name 'chrysacanthus' comes from 'chrysos' (gold) and 'akantha' (spine).
