Ferocactus with a petite, grayish-spined globe, topped with charming rose to reddish-purple blooms. The Japanese name is Beniyomaru. While part of the "fierce-spined cactus" group that is Ferocactus, this species is notably compact and blooms early compared to its relatives. Even young plants about 7 cm in diameter may already produce buds, pleasantly defying the typical idea that "Ferocactus don't flower until they get big." New spines emerge in vivid shocking pink, then gradually soften to pale pink or gray with time. The twisted spines give it a certain toughness, yet it still comes across as "oddly cute for a strong-spined cactus." It's hardy, loves sunlight, and thrives as long as you avoid excess moisture—making it a great choice, even for beginners interested in Ferocactus.
Its resemblance to F. chrysacanthus is no accident—both were described by Orcutt in 1899 on the exact same page of the same book, making them like twin siblings. If you compare their spines: F. chrysacanthus is covered in dense golden spines that almost hide the skin, while this species sports more spaced, gray-toned spines so you can see some of its surface. ***The real difference is in their flowers: purple to rose hues means it's Beniyomaru, yellow to orange signals Kinkanryu ( F. chrysacanthus ).*** They also flower in different seasons—Beniyomaru in spring, Kinkanryu in summer. Found on the peninsula facing Cedros Island (the home of Kinkanryu), as well as nearby Natividad Island. The species name fordii honors Mr. Lyman M. Ford of San Diego.
