You might not be familiar with the genus Gibbaeum, but it's actually closely related to Conophytum and Lampranthus—so it's part of the "mesemb" family. One of its standout traits is its beak-shaped, distinctly asymmetrical leaves. Unlike many other mesembs that bury themselves, Gibbaeum tends to grow as a chunky mound above ground. Most species sport a simple, bright green color that subtly shimmers and reflects the light. Gibbaeum geminum, known as "Aotamako-dama" in Japanese, is especially similar to Lampranthus. Its thick, finger-like leaves grow upright on woody stems, and the plant spreads sideways as well, forming creeping stems that eventually cover the whole pot like a groundcover carpet. During its active growing season in winter through spring, it blooms with glossy purple flowers, looking almost like "a big-leaf version of @." Try growing it in a spacious pot and enjoy the profusion of flowers!
