PUKUBOOK Succulent picture book

CACTACEAE Gymnocactus gielsdorfianus

Also Known As JA 黒槍丸

A petite cactus with a pure, elegant air: its white, wax-coated body is topped with fluffy, cottony tufts, and it blooms with delicate white flowers. Although its slender spines are mostly white, their tips are black, creating a striking accent—which seems to be the origin of the name 'Kokusoumaru'. Overall, it gives off the vibe of a 'white holy knight wielding a spear black only at the tip.'

Growth is slow, and even when fully mature, it only reaches about 7 cm; it rarely forms clusters, so you can expect it to keep its charming appearance for a long time (even though it stays small, that's the finished plant—so please understand the somewhat higher price).

Scientifically, it's classified under the genus Turbinicarpus, but it is still often called by its old genus name, Gymnocactus. It resembles other former Gymnocactus species like G. beguinii , G. knuthianus , and G. saueri , but with its white skin and fluffy fuzz, it also shares a horticultural kinship with Lophophora. The reading 'kokusoumaru' is the most common way to pronounce its name.
