With its glossy, sparkling windows lined with a striking net-like pattern over round, tapered tube-shaped leaves, this beautiful type of Haworthia is a real showstopper. The leaves are hairless and a bright green, with a bold contrast between semi-translucent areas and deep green mesh, so striking that the Latin name picturata (meaning 'decorated' or 'pictured') fits perfectly. In Japan, the variety known as 'Sakura Suishou' is the perfect textbook example of these features, but there isn’t a clear definitive source confirming it as true picturata—so it's safest to think of it as “possibly a type of picturata**.” To begin with, picturata itself isn’t sharply distinguished from related species, and individual plants can be highly variable, so you’ll find many Haworthias with the name ‘picturata’ that don’t quite look like 'Sakura Suishou.'

Originally, picturata was classified as a variety under the former gracilis group. Bayer formally described it in 1999 from a cliffside population near Enon (close to Kirkwood) in the Western Cape, South Africa. It stands out among the large family of クーペリー H. cooperi —said to be the only one known to grow exclusively on cliffs in the wild. Although picturata is described as ‘hairless,’ that’s mostly in comparison to other members of the cooperi group—like ベヌスタ H. cooperi var.venusta —because it still has short hairs reminiscent of lace-leaved types along the leaf margins. The leaves are plump and glistening when actively growing, but if the plant dries out, the leaves flatten and the rosette tightens up into the classic lace-type shape. If you search for photos, you might think you’re looking at completely different species, but it’s all the same plant!

The name ‘Suiun’ seems to have come from China, but its origin is unclear, and its relationship with ‘Sakura Suishou’ is not well understood. エメラルドLED H. 'Emerald LED' also looks like it's in the 'Sakura Suishou' or picturata group, but its exact origins are also uncertain.
