A retusa-type Haworthia known for its wide, triangular leaf windows adorned with delicate white spots, and for taking on beautiful tan hues when exposed to strong sunlight. However, because hybrids have become so popular, finding the wild (species) form is now quite difficult.
Scientifically, it is considered the same as Haworthia emelyae H. emelyae , but perhaps because "emelyae" is less well-known, the various hybrids are referred to as the "Picta group (also known as the Pixa group)". Many of these have plump windows colored with white spots that droop downward, resulting in a typically rounded, elegant rosette shape.
The word picta comes from Latin, meaning "decorated" or "adorned," and is also the root of the word "picture." It's a perfect name for this species, where growers compete for the most beautifully decorated leaf windows.
透明できらめく「窓」の美しさやフォルムや模様のバリエーションの豊富さで、宝石のように扱われているハオルチア。「100万円を超える高価な多肉植物」と世間を賑わせています。その原産地はすべて南アフリカのごく限れたエリア。雨は殆ど降らないけど温暖で、湿度が十分高いのがポイント。窓のある軟葉系ハオルチアはヤブや岩陰で、半分地面に埋まりながら、僅かな光をその窓で集めながら生きています。だから、極度な暑さも寒さもNG。水は控えめだけど湿度は保つ。といったことがポイントです。
多肉植物のイメージとは反対に、日陰を好みます。終日カンカンに日が当たる環境だと枯れてしまうとか。とは言え、全く陽があたらない室内だと徒長してしまうこともあって意外とやっかい。1～2時間程度は日が当たるところか、レースカーテン越しの日が当たる窓辺などが最適です。
寒さに弱いので、基本的に冬は屋内に取り込みます。外で管理する場合はビニールなどの防寒対策を十分にすれば外気温が-5℃でも大丈夫。蒸れには比較的強いので、夏も直射日光を控えめに、通気を良くすれば、屋外でも大丈夫です。
基本的には、乾いたらたっぷりと与えます。ただ、水をやりすぎると徒長しやすくなるので要注意。ハオルチアはエケベリアなどと違って、根が太く、葉っぱだけでなく根にも水を蓄えるので、乾燥には強く、思いの外あげなくても大丈夫。特に夏の間は断水してもいいくらい。赤く枯れたようになりますが、涼しくなって水やりを再開すると元気な緑色に戻ります。
ほとんど無くても大丈夫ですが、春と秋に、緩効性の肥料を置いておきます。液肥はあまり使われないようです。
1～2年に1回、株よりも少し大きめの鉢に植え替えます。根を深く張るので、株の直径の2倍くらいの高さのある鉢を使います。根鉢は崩し、古い根は整理して、そのまますぐに新しい用土に植え込みます。水やりはすぐにせず、1～2週間してから。
株分けで増やします。成長してくると脇芽を出して群生するので、十分な大きさになってきたら、植替えのついでに外して植え直します。子株にも根が出ていて、軽い力でパキッと外れるかどうかがポイント。あまり小さいまま外すと成長が遅くなります。が、幹の途中から出てきた子株を放置すると親株の形が崩れるので、小さいうちからカットする、という育て方もあります。葉挿しもできるし、実生もメジャーです。
