Leaves like an inky, marbled scroll painting—silvery grey with random dark red stripes, as if the color is seeping through. These blunt-tipped, spear-shaped leaves stretch out in every direction, making for a bold, unforgettable look the moment you see it. The surface is coated in a thick waxy layer, which can make the patterns look faint, but give it a quick splash of water and the colors pop instantly, dazzling in their vividness. Definitely try it out for yourself!

This striking personality is thanks to a genus you might not have heard of: Lenophyllum. Unlike Echeveria, which forms a rosette, Lenophyllum grows its leaves in pairs, alternating left and right—what botanists call an "opposite" leaf arrangement(see here). Taxonomically, it’s close to Crassula, and both share the opposite-leaf trait. But while Crassula hails from South Africa, Lenophyllum comes from the arid lands of Mexico and the American Southwest. You could think of it as a sort of "American-style Crassula." I haven’t grown it much myself, but from the feel of its firm, resilient stems—which are slow to root—it reminds me of caring for Cotyledon in many ways.

Another charm point: from spring to early summer, it sends up slender flower stalks topped with tiny yellow, star-shaped blooms.

Its scientific name comes from "gutta"—Latin for "drop," meaning "decorated with spots or drops." As for the Japanese name "kanoko"—that’s probably inspired by "kanoko shibori," a traditional tie-dye pattern, cleverly matching the blend of dots and stripes on its leaves. It’s a pretty dashing choice, don’t you think?
