A red gem among Tillandsias. Its thick, sturdy leaves stretch rhythmically in two rows to form impressive, clustered colonies, drawing the eye into deep, shadowy valleys created by their layered arrangement. From this green sculptural form emerges a vivid crimson flower—strikingly beautiful, like a necklace of rubies (though it rarely blooms in Japan's climate). It hails from the sheer cliffs of Salta Province in northern Argentina. The species is named after Alberto Castellanos, the Argentine botanist who discovered it. Many hybrids using this plant as a parent exist, with well-known ones including 'Mystic Rainbow' and 'Mystic Trumpet.' Incidentally, the plant that served as our main image for a long time (now moved to the DETAIL section) was labeled as Tillandsia albertiana at a certain botanical garden—showing that even institutions can sometimes make mistakes.
