With its thin, sharp, reddish-black central spines ready for physical attack, and its white radial spines radiating outward to shield itself from the sun, this Mammillaria has truly perfected its all-around defense. While there are some Mammillarias that are soft and completely non-aggressive, this one's defensive and offensive abilities are among the strongest in the genus. Although it's only found in a small area near Guaymas in northwestern Mexico, it's actually quite common within that region. Its name, Mammillaria johnstonii, honors American botanist Ivan Murray Johnston.
