A hybrid between Mangave 'Bloodspot' M. 'Bloodspot' and Agave potatorum (Butterfly Agave) Butterfly Agave A. potatorum . With its bold look more intense than most mangaves and those striking, eerie spots you won't find on agaves, this plant is seriously cool. Originated in Taiwan. The name 'Bloodspot' gets translated literally as '血雨' ("Blood Rain") in Chinese characters over there, so that's the name that's made its way back here—no one seems totally sure how to pronounce it ((everyone kind of avoids the topic…)). It's often shortened to '血雷' ("Blood Thunder"), and you'll sometimes see the name '厚葉血雷', which hints at a thick-leaved form of 'Blood Rain Potatorum'. But even standard 'Blood Rain Potatorum' plants in circulation can show that same chunky look in photos ((whether it's just individual differences or something to do with growing conditions is still unclear)).
