With delicate, slender leaves and dainty flowers, this perennial is often seen as a flowery ornamental... at least, that’s how it’s usually thought of overseas. In Japan, though, it’s cherished as a striking caudex, famous for its contrast of strength and subtlety: a rugged, stocky trunk supports a shower of shimmering, beaded fine leaves, which in turn give way to slim, glossy white flowers that resemble daisies. Overseas, the root caudex is often regarded as "something that just develops underground over time". Of course, how you appreciate this plant is totally up to you! Incidentally, P. resurgens is the same species—if anything, Mesembryanthemum is considered the official group, while Phyllobolus is a subgenus.
