The red variant of "Schubei" M. schubei . This striking cultivar turns its stem and leaves a vivid red from environmental stress during its growing period. That's the common understanding, but according to isla del pescado, they feature a "Tanzania Red" with a different leaf and spine shape compared to these mainstream individuals. It’s unclear which type came first or which is the "true" Tanzania Red, so it's probably best to simply recognize that there are two types. The photo shows the "red variant type of Schubei." By the way, the genus "Monadenium" was originally named for its flowers having a single nectar gland, but genetic analysis has shown it's difficult to separate it from Euphorbia, and now it's merged into Euphorbia. Among plants sold as M. guentheri , some have the exact same appearance as the "red variant of Schubei"—but this is probably just a labeling mix-up.
