When cactus enthusiasts talk excitedly about "Agave! Agave!", they're often referring to the so-called "agave cactus"—that is, the Agave-botan. Its slender tubercles stand out in spiky tufts, making it look agave-like from a distance. True to its name, it's a cactus that looks a lot like an agave. But if you look closely, you'll notice clusters of fluffy spines along the “leaves” (technically stems)—a telltale sign it’s not a real agave. Agave-botan belongs to the genus Neogomesia, which has just a single species. It's reminiscent of other striking cacti like "Hanabotan" A. furfuraceus and "Ryukaku-botan" A. scapharostrum in the Ariocarpus group.
