This succulent grows in tight clusters, with plump, spiky leaves that shine a translucent yellow-green. Native to Japan, it's even named "japonica" in its scientific name. You’ll find it clinging bravely to cliffs from the Kanto region westward and on some outlying islands. It’s long been cherished in Japanese horticulture, and you’ll find many unique varieties with subtle, refined Japanese names. Interestingly, if you’re looking for the rarest types, you’re better off checking specialty wildflower shops than typical succulent stores. Since 2020, Orostachys japonica has been listed as Near Threatened on the Ministry of the Environment’s Red List, so trading it—including on sites like Yahoo Auctions—may sometimes be subject to regulations.
