With the stark red rock desert as its backdrop, this adorable 'monster' grows thick, winding trunks topped with equally thick, brush-like tufts. It’s found across the American Southwest—California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and northern Mexico. California even has the “Joshua Tree National Park” named after it, where the species is protected. While it’s a familiar, tree-like sight to many people living in the southern United States, in Japan it’s not something you often see in its natural form. Side note: if you hear 'Joshua Tree' and immediately think of U2, I feel like we’d get along!

@BigSnugALot I'm curious about the science behind this. I looked up divergence dates for Yucca (which includes the Joshua tree, Y. brevifolia) and found this paper: https://t.co/Sykd4PDRYw It places the origin of Asparagaceae (yuccas, agaves, asparagus, hyacinths, etc.) in the Cenozoic.

@Danj5254 Wikipedia says "Yucca brevifolia is a plant species belonging to the genus Yucca. It is tree-like in habit, which is reflected in its common names: Joshua tree, yucca palm, tree yucca, and palm tree yucca"
