Most cacti solved drought by swelling their stems and getting rid of branches and leaves altogether, reducing surface area to a minimum. Leuchtenbergia apparently reconsidered. “Actually, leaves were kind of useful.” So it reinvented them as elongated tubercles, ending up with a silhouette so strikingly similar to Agave that it earned the nickname Agave Cactus. Evolution has a sense of humor.
