Aloe microstigma푸른 바탕에 셀 수 없이 많은 흰 점무늬가 흩어져 있고, 스트레스를 받으면 이 바탕색만이 빨간색이나 주황색으로 변하는 요염하고 독특한 단풍색을 자랑하는 알로에입니다。남아프리카의 카루 지역에서는 바위와 마른 풀 사이에 숨어 지내지만 의외로 자주 목격된다고 해요. 하지만 일본에서는 거의 볼 수 없는 희귀종입니다。이렇게도 극적으로 변하는 단풍과 아름다운 무늬를 선보이는데도 말이죠? 애호가들 사이에서는 조금씩 인기가 올라가고 있는 듯하고, 새로운 붐을 불러올지도 모르겠네요。학명 microstigma는 '아주 작은 반점'이라는 뜻으로, 바로 이 잎 전체에 흩어진 흰 반점 그 자체를 강조한 이름입니다。햇볕을 잘 쬐거나 추위에 노출시키면 바탕색이 적갈색에서 오렌지빛으로 변하지만, 종의 기본 색상은 어디까지나 '청록색(blue-green)'으로 등록되어 있기 때문에, 업자 사진에 나오는 새빨간 모습은 재배 환경에 따라 끌어낸 특별한 색상일지도 모릅니다。그 색을 멋지게 끌어내는 비법, 궁금해지네요。
