Gasteria maculata밝은 빛 아래, 길고 두툼한 잎이 촉촉하며 부드러운 윤기를 띠고, 제각각 늘어지거나 살짝 겹쳐 무리를 이룹니다. 그 늘어진 모습에는 어딘가 관능적인 매력이 느껴집니다. 하지만 조금도 유치하거나 아부하는 느낌 없이, 가까이 다가가면 오히려 그 고요함이 깨질 것 같은 시원하고 청아한 아름다움이 깃들어 있습니다. 속을 들여다보면 우윳빛의 점들이 숨어 있는데, 이 점들을 배경 삼아 누군가 '먹으로 그린 듯하다'고 느낀 듯합니다. 그래서 붙여진 일본 이름이 바로 '스미호코(墨鉾)', 학명은 Gasteria maculata 입니다. 메이지 말기에서 다이쇼 시대 무렵 일본에 들어온 것으로 보이며, 카리스마 있는 존재감을 자랑하지만 정확한 시기나 유래는 뚜렷하지 않습니다. 이 식물은 남아프리카 동케이프주 출신으로, 여름형 다육식물입니다. 비교적 추위에도 강해 야외 월동도 어느 정도 잘 견딜 수 있습니다. Gasteria로는 드물게 줄기를 뻗는 타입(5~20cm 정도)이며, 성장하면 전체적으로 최대 높이 70cm, 지름 약 1m의 군생을 이룰 수 있다고 합니다. 시크하고 차분한 자태는 일본식 경관에도 아주 자연스럽게 어울립니다. 일본 정원의 한켠이나, 돌과 자갈을 배치한 마당에도 자연스럽게 녹아들어, 흔한 알로에로는 표현하기 어려운 분위기를 만들어내는 인상적인 심볼플랜트로 존재감을 발휘할 것입니다. 고즈넉한 정원에 이국적이면서도 은은한 멋을 더하고 싶을 때 추천드립니다.
