Gasteria maculata在明亮的光线下，长而肥厚的叶片泛着柔和湿润的光泽，随性地垂落、松散地层层叠起，形成一丛丛相聚在一起。它那不经意的姿态中，带着几分别样的韵味。但又丝毫没有刻意讨好之感，反而让人觉得，若再靠近一步，似乎就会打破它那清凉静谧的美。叶面深处隐现的乳白色斑点，有人将整株深色叶面当作背景，觉得像是用墨轻描而成，因此得名“墨鉾（すみほこ）”。据说自明治末期到大正年间就已传入日本，给人一种历史悠久、分量十足的印象，不过具体年代和缘由已不可考。这种夏生型植物原产于南非东开普省，比较耐寒，户外越冬也有望成功。不像一般的观音莲属（Gasteria），它属于较为少见的能抽生短茎的类型（大约5至20厘米），成株时整棵植物最高可达70厘米、直径有望达到1米，形成壮观的群生丛。它那低调雅致的风格，非常适合融入日式景观。不论是日本庭园的一隅，还是点缀着石块与砾石的庭前，这株“墨鉾”都能自然地与环境融合。在那些普通芦荟难以表现特色的地方，它可以成为极具印象感的标志性植物。若希望为静谧的庭院增添一抹异国风情和独特光彩，它会是理想的选择。
