Geohintonia mexicana渋いサンドベージュのボディにシャープで彫りの深いリブがクールで大人びた雰囲気の個性的なサボテン。近くに住むアズテキウムのヒントニー A. hintonii と共にメキシコの北東部ヌエボレオン州にて90年代に発見された新種で、そのごく限られた生息域と乱獲によって絶滅が危惧されている希少種（今は現地の人の手で厳重に守られていてレッドリストランクは控えめ）。サボテンの中でも特に生長の遅い種で、数センチになるのに5〜6年かかるとか。実生も進んでいますがまだまだ数は十分ではなく高価なサボテンの代名詞になっています。
