@BigSnugALot I'm curious about the science behind this. I looked up divergence dates for Yucca (which includes the Joshua tree, Y. brevifolia) and found this paper: https://t.co/Sykd4PDRYw It places the origin of Asparagaceae (yuccas, agaves, asparagus, hyacinths, etc.) in the Cenozoic.

@Danj5254 Wikipedia says "Yucca brevifolia is a plant species belonging to the genus Yucca. It is tree-like in habit, which is reflected in its common names: Joshua tree, yucca palm, tree yucca, and palm tree yucca"
@canislatrans @geodirtdude @Sammy_Roth @KenLayne @PaleoLaura NPS "Legend has it that Mormon pioneers in the United States first referred to the yucca brevifolia agave plant as the Joshua tree because its branches reminded them of Joshua stretching his arms upward in supplication, guiding the travelers westward."
@DanielleMorrill Not agaves, they're actually Yucca brevifolia.
I think it would be fun to be a Glossotherium or perhaps a Nothrotheriops about 11,000 years ago in a southwest desert forest including such species as Cylindropuntia fulgida, Sphaeralcea ambigua, and Yucca brevifolia. Just munching on plants, not much to think about.️

Ummm. A Joshua tree is not a tree. A Joshua tree, called Yucca brevifolia, which is a plant that belongs to the genus Yucca. A tall, pokey plant, basically. Yucca brevifolia is tree like in it's shape, which is where the confusion commonly arises. They are still cool AF. https://t.co/CEBBEos63V
