When you think of the ultimate succulent event in Kansai, what comes to mind? Of course, a few names might pop up, but there is one absolute must-attend event: BOTANICBOMB. Officially, it is billed as “the largest in Northern Kinki,” but it is no exaggeration to say it has evolved into one of Kansai's ultimate succulent havens! I actually visited BOTANICBOMB myself, so I am thrilled to share this photo report with you.
This is a report from the 7th edition held in December 2024. As details may change for future events, please be sure to check the official information.
Set against the scenic backdrop of Sandanike Park in Fukuchiyama City, Kyoto, this plant festival is held twice a year as one of the largest plant markets in Northern Kinki. It is a massive event where around 70 specialized booths gather, focusing specifically on so-called “succulents,” ranging from Echeveria and Agave to cacti, caudiciforms, and Tillandsia.
The event also features a fantastic lineup of food options and food trucks, and the official shop even features a DJ booth to fill the air with live music.
Admission is free starting from 10:00 AM. Early entry at 9:00 AM requires a special ticket. While there is a free parking lot that accommodates about 1,000 cars, it gets completely full before noon, so I highly recommend arriving early.
The venue is the plaza right in front of the “General Gymnasium” inside Sandanike Park. There are three main entrances, but the queue before the gates open forms at the central entrance.
From Echeveria, Agave, and caudiciforms to Tillandsia. The lineup features what we lovingly call succulents and their closely related genres (conversely, you will rarely see ferns or standard houseplants here). The sellers range from professional nurseries to passionate individual collectors. It was wonderful to see so many local growers showcasing their plants.
If you walk just past the venue down the stairs, you will find a lovely botanical garden. While it is relatively compact in scale, you can witness the wild, majestic forms of some iconic succulent species, so it is definitely worth a visit!
The latest updates are posted under our event information section. Though, of course, a quick Google search might be faster (laughs)!
