As suggested by its nickname "Desert Rose," the genus Adenium is highly regarded for its beautiful flowers. In Japan, almost all of the Adenium species found in the market are either "Obesum @ ", "Arabicum," or this "Socotranum"—and of these, Socotranum is the rare gem you usually see only at specialty shops. True to its name, it's native to Socotra Island—a place so rich in endemic species it's often compared to another world (Socotra is famous for its high rate of endemism, making it feel almost otherworldly). It's often said that Socotranum grows taller than Obesum and that as it matures, it develops into a tree-like form with a thick trunk, and in fact, young plants do stand tall and slender. However, the Socotranum plants commonly seen in Japan—imported from Thailand—appear to be hybrids (or maybe grafted?) and are known in the trade as "Thai Soco." So, if you are looking for a truly pure Socotranum, you may want to check with the shop before making a purchase.
