With its somewhat broad leaves, deeply cupped rosette, and a bright, luminous center in fresh spring growth, this is a variegated Aeonium with a striking marginal variegation. It originally appeared as a [branch mutation from 'Medusa' A. 'Medusa' in 2021](https://thedrurys.com/galleries/the-drury-family/181-aeonium-canary#:~:text=Aeonium%20'Medusa'%20mutation%20and%20said%20to%20be%20stable.%20It%20was%20found%20in%20spring%20of%202021). Since 'Medusa' itself is said to be a variegated selection that originated from 'Velour' A. 'Velour' , it's only natural that they share the same feature of a bright center. This cultivar was first discovered in China, where its original name was “金丝雀法师(金糸雀法師) / Jin Si Que.” Many Aeonium species are native to the Canary Islands, and there's even a true species called 'canariense' A. canariense , but this plant isn't related—its name most likely comes simply from its vibrant colors, reminiscent of a canary bird. Of course, the bird “canary” itself is named after the Canary Islands. As this is a naturally variegated cultivar, names like “Canary Nishiki” or “Variegated Canary” should refer to the same plant, but if you come across a plant sold as “Canary” without any variegation, it might be a case where the variegation has reverted, or perhaps it’s being confused with 'canariense.'
