An Agave with countless slender leaves that spread out like a fountain, giving a light and airy feel to desert gardens. Although it resembles a Yucca, it doesn’t develop an elongated stem, so it works perfectly as ornamental grass at the front of plantings. Its Japanese name is “Fukiage,” but A. stricta is also commonly called “Fukiage,” making the distinction between them rather blurry….

The plant commonly known as “Striata” is the most widely distributed species across northern Mexico, growing up to around 60cm tall. I haven’t found a photo that is definitively labeled “this is ssp.striata!”, but compared to ssp.falcata, it generally appears much finer and lighter in form.
Agave striata f.minima
Agave striata 'Minima'
Agave striata 'Nana'
This is a compact species often called “Needle Agave” overseas. In Japan, it’s known by the name “Nana” and is also available here. It stays around 15cm tall.
A. striata ssp.striata f.minor
The plant known in Japan as “Hime Fukiage” is thought to be a dwarfed form of Striata, referred to as “minor.” It’s pronounced “Minor,” and for reference, it’s sometimes treated as a separate species from Nana (Minima).
Falcata. It’s said to have fewer, broader, and thicker leaves than Striata—but honestly, they look very similar.
“Stricta” looks even more like Striata than Striata’s own subspecies do! In fact, it has sometimes been classified as a subspecies of Striata ( A. striata ssp.stricta ), though at other times, it’s been considered distinct. Its range is much narrower, found mainly around the Chihuahuan Desert in Mexico. When mature, it reaches about 50cm tall, making it a bit smaller than Striata.
