This variety features sharp, matte blue-gray leaves accented by striking red or orange spines—a beautiful contrast. The vivid red spines are its most charming trait, but you'll find some with glossy, centipede-like red spines, and others with "connected spines" that join together to form a continuous band—several types are available on the market. It readily produces offsets, making it easy to find and grow. Its origins are a bit mysterious; the name "Kutsugen no Maiougi" was given when the plant entered cultivation, but details remain unclear. (Some say it's a type of A. palmeri , others insist it's different even though they look similar—there are many opinions().) The name is pronounced "kutsugen no maiougi." Kutsugen refers to an illustrious figure from ancient China.
